Old foes – Separatist Terror in the 21st Century

Separatism has always been a pervasive ideology among subnational armed groups. Terrorism research, however, concentrates less on separatist groups nowadays. The rise of Islamist Jihadist terrorism in the past two decades diverted the focus of experts and pushed separatist terrorist outfits somewhat into the background. That is why it is paramount to draw attention to the fact that separatism remained a major force behind violent subnational conflicts with hundreds of smaller (e.g. the National Liberation Front of Tripura in India) and dozens of major extremist and terrorist groups (e.g. Moro Islamic Liberation Front in the Philippines) fighting to carve out independent states from their countries of origin.
