Al-Qaeda vs ISIS - A Power Struggle for the Leading Role in Islamist Terrorism

The future winner of this power struggle – it seems – largely depends on the outcomes of the Syrian conflict and ISIS’ expansion in Iraq. If the anti-ISIS coalition manages to defeat the group somehow in these theaters AQ will definitely step into the power vacuum left behind. If ISIS will not be defeated in these two countries, it will most likely become the sole new leading power in Sunni Jihadism and the Northern regions of the Middle East will be thrown back into the Middle Ages, not unlike Afghanistan during the Taliban regime.
